Styles of Play
When you create a campaign, the first choice is its style of play — what kind of game it is. That choice is fixed for the life of the campaign and shapes the whole Play screen: whether you have a character sheet, whether dice are real, what surfaces sit around the journal.
Two axes: style vs mode
It’s worth keeping two ideas apart:
- Style of play (this page) — the kind of game: freeform, or rules-driven. Chosen once, at creation.
- Mode — who drives the story: you, the Storyteller, or both. Changeable anytime, mid-campaign.
Any style can be played in any of the modes you’ve enabled. A Mythweave campaign can be Assistant or Game Master; a Vowbound campaign can be played hands-on or handed to the Storyteller. Style decides the rules; mode decides the voice.
Mythweave — freeform
Just you and the story. Mythweave has no character sheet between you and the fiction. You narrate, the oracles surprise you (omens, meaning rolls, events), and the entropy dial keeps the world volatile. It’s the purest solo-journaling experience — closest to a notebook and a pair of dice. See How Mythweave Plays.
Vowbound — rules-driven
Stats, moves, vows, dice. Vowbound is a full game built on the Ironsworn ruleset: a character sheet with stats and condition meters, a deck of moves, real dice rolled by a deterministic engine, and progress tracks for your vows. You begin by forging a character. See How Vowbound Plays.
Delve — Vowbound + perilous sites
Everything Vowbound is, plus dungeons. Delve adds perilous sites — dungeons, ruins, and other dangerous places explored as their own progress tracks, with their own moves for mapping, locating features, and revealing dangers. Play otherwise follows the Vowbound loop.
Starsworn — space opera
Starforged — space-opera adventure with stakes. Starsworn is the same rules-driven foundation reskinned for the stars, based on Ironsworn: Starforged. Alongside everything Vowbound offers it adds connections (relationship tracks), vehicles, and legacy tracks (Quests / Bonds / Discoveries) as the source of XP. The Play screen wears space-opera labels but plays like Vowbound.
